Reroll App Review

Backed by over 18 000 people on Kickstarter, Reroll App lets you create and customize your D&D characters in 16-bit pixel art in a super easy way!

Last week I was browsing Twitter and someone I follow retweeted a very pleasing image on a tweet. I love D&D and I love pixel art and retro games, so it naturally grabbed my attention.

After some minutes reading (and checking out the awesome character portraits) I discovered there was a mobile app called Reroll that lets you create those D&D portraits in a very simple and quick way.

I really encourage Dungeon Masters to test any new content and apps before adding and recommending them to their players, to see if they’re useful and suitable at their gaming table.

My first impression was seeing that the app was free to download so I decided to try the Demo (Free) Version, here are my comments…

About the App: Reroll

Reroll is an amazing kickstarter-backed visual character sheet app (that also runs on web browsers).

It’s been created by husband and wife Danny Limanseta and Jolene Chan, two pixel art enthusiasts from Singapore.

The main use of the app is that it allows you to create 16-bit pixel-art style character portraits and it can also be used as a character sheet (which is great for those players that always forget their character sheets at home).

After some minutes diving in, I realised that Reroll is a free app with more unlockable content (totally optional) but what I really liked is that it is fully functional even on the Free version!

The only type of content locked behind the “paywall” is just more options to make your character look cooler (WAAAAAAAAY COOLER!)

What I Love About the App

The app has many great features that I’ve been loving so far:

• 100% Customizable colors (Hue, Saturation, Brightness, Tint and Opacity)
• Almost all D&D races are included (they plan to include every race in the future)
• Big weapon, clothing, pet and base catalogue
• Automatic character sheet generation (for classes in the SRD)
• Customizable equipment (stats, names and descriptions)
• Spell tracking capabilities (SRD spells)
• Ability to import your own content to the app

Reroll currently offers 3 character creation options: Character Art Only, Blank Character Sheet and Guided Creation.

Character Art Only: offers the ability to create and design your character without the character sheet and stats. Great for players who just want to use the app as a visual help.

Guided Creation: create and design your character portrait and also an automated character sheet, this only works for SRD content only, for copyright reasons.

Blank Character Sheet: offers the ability to create whatever you want! (this is great if you’re using expansions or more races/classes that are not in the SRD)

Improvement Opportunities

The app is still new (released in August 2019) and it has been adding more and more content gradually, however there are some things that the app could to better in the fuutre.

These improvement opportunities affect just the “quality of life” of the app.

• Matching colors when adding different clothing pieces can be hard sometimes, there should be an RGB slider or Hex code box to customize our colors
• There should be a “party” option, so the DM can have read-access to their party member’s character sheets and/or the ability to give them “rewards” directly (like sending them equipment or gold)

Creating My Own Character

If you’ve read The Dark Elf Trilogy (by R.A. Salvatore) like me, you know who Drizzt Do’Urden is. I even bet you’ve seen this Drow Ranger before.

Maybe you’ve played the Legend of Drizzt Board Game that WotC published some years ago? Or maybe you recognize his portrait:

Well, my goal here is to replicate him using both the Demo and Standard account, to see the differences on the characters you can create! Let’s go!

What do you think? I think it came up really nice! Well, the pet option is for Standard accounts only, but the rest is 100% Free content.

Conclusion

Reroll is a new app that’s going to get better with age and as long as they keep updating it with new content, it will definitely become the best D&D mobile app at your gaming table.

Reroll App is a great app 4/5. It deserves its score and I’m sure that with every update it will keep getting better and better!

• Performance: 4/5 – a bit hard to customize colors and you have to manually add everything that’s not in the SRD, one by one
• Price-Value Ratio: 4/5 – there are cheper character sheet apps but each party member having to pay $10 is too expensive in my opinion
• Product Quality: 5/5 – the app works amazingly and the art is just so cool. You’ve got to love it
